Research Studies
The Strategic Research Group wants to:
1 Develop a network of linked paediatric neurodisability service teams
We will start by establishing the location of and a contact person for the neurodisability teams across the country. Jeremy Parr and Nicola Jolleff have almost completed a repeat the 1998/9 survey conducted by Helen McConachie, Stuart Logan and Alison Salt. Then we shall establish how readily such teams could identify, from their information systems, children with specific impairments that would be eligible for multi-centre studies.
Then we will establish which teams would like to be part of a linked research network
2 Develop successful NIHR or equivalent grant applications
The Melatonin trial led by Paul Gringras for the Medicines for Children Research Network is a good exemplar.
A study will be developed around excessive salivation to examine natural history, trial of alternative drug therapies, and impact on family, participation and quality of life. A UK grant development group will soon meet.
A study may also be developed around outcome measures for autism interventions. In particular the triad of impact on family, participation and quality of life
3 Develop priority research areas
One aim of the SRG is to encourage and assist people in the field, including families, young people and clinicians, to identify research priorities. We all need a framework and reasoned arguments for determining research priorities. The SRG will take this forward in the second half of 2010.
